Summer and fall in the White Mountain region is full of adventure and creating memories. There are a number of family friendly attractions, shows, and things to do to keep your family busy. Whether you want to take the children on a memorable vacation at Santa’s Village or Story Land, a family favorite for many generations, or want to take the more scenic route by taking the Cog Railway up to the summit of Mount Washington, the highest peak in New England, there is something for everyone in the White Mountain region.

Below are a few of our favorite things to do in the White Mountain region throughout the summer and fall, many of them within miles of each other. Pack your vacation full of smiles, laughs, and memories. As we explore the White Mountain region we will adding on, we hope you enjoy the region as much as we do.

Santa’s Village:

Spend your day Santa and his reindeer, exciting rides, a light show, and trying to find all of the letters to graduate from Elf University at Santa’s Village, a family favorite for many generations. You’ll want to make sure to bring a swim suit to cool down in HoHoH2O water park and JOYride water slides. There are plenty of lockers to store your belongings and lounge chairs to sit back and recharge while the children enjoy the water features.

Open for special events for Halloween & New Year’s Eve and for 11 weekend days for the 18th annual Christmastime celebration.

Story Land

Fairy tales have come to life at Story Land for over 60 years. The theme park is filled with shows, games, attractions and 22 themed rides including the newest attraction this year: Roar-O-Saurus, a wooden roller coaster. The Antique Cars & Bamboo Chutes have been a favorite for many families throughout the years. Cool down on Dr. Geyser’s Remarkable Raft Ride, and for the younger children stop by Dr. Geyser’s “Mini-Geysers” as they play the guessing game as to which hole with squirt water. Bring your favorite storybook characters and animals to life by visiting Mother Goose, Cinderella, The Woman in the Shoe, Baa Baa Black Sheep, the Three Little Pigs and others.

Loon Mountain

Explore Loon Mountain throughout the summer and fall, not just winter. Start your day off by soaring to Loon’s Summit on NH’s Longest Scenic Skyride. Once at top, climb the Observation Tower for amazing views of the mountain and explore the summit glacial caves. Back at the base, soar through the air on the Zipline, bounce and flip in the Bungee Trampoline, and see if you can reach the top of the Climbing Wall.  Put your sense of direction to test in the LogJam Maze, group up into teams and see who will conquer the challenge first. Let the kids bounce around and shoot some hoops in the Bunyan’s Bouncin’ Backyard, and test their climbing skills in the SpiderWeb. End your day with a scenic bike ride around Loon Mountain and downtown Lincoln, with the paved bike paths.

Mount Washington Cog Railway

Take a 3 hour round-trip train ride to the summit of Mt. Washington, the highest peak in New England on the eco-friendly biodiesel or historic coal-fired steam locomotives. On the way up and down you will experience an on guide tour with breathtaking views of the Mount Washington Valley. Once at the summit you’ll be able to experience panoramic views of New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, north into Canada, and even east to the Atlantic Ocean on clear days. Visit the Sherman Adams Visitors Center, Mount Washington Observatory’s Weather Museum and 1853 Tip Top House, and make sure to to take a memorable photo at the summit marker. Advance booking is recommended.

May-October: Three-hour round trip with approx. one-hour stop at the summit of Mount Washington with free entry into the new Observatory Museum.

November: One-hour round trip. Travel half-way to the summit, Upper Waumbek Switch.

Flume Gorge

Enjoy a self-guided nature walk to just the Gorge, or take the 2 mile loop around, where you will discover covered bridges, amazing waterfalls, a scenic pool, and incredible mountain views. Wear study shoes as there are many stairs to climb. The children will enjoy climbing through the bear cave and crawling through the Wolf’s den. You’ll start and end at the Visitor’s Center which offers a free 20-minute movie on Franconia Notch State Park.

  • Children age 6-12 $12
  • Under 5 free.

Clark’s Trading Post:

Stop by Clark’s Trading Post, a trusted family theme park since 1928 and watch the Bear Show and Chinese Acrobats. Take a steam train ride on The White Mountain Central and  come face to face with the Wolfman.  If your’re 48” or taller take a 3 minute ride on a Segway i2, or if you’re feeling adventurous  take the 45 minutes Segway Safari guided tour into Wolfman’s Territory on an off-road Segway X2.   Hop on board the Water Blaster Boats – just beware, you may end up SOAKED! Reach the top of the Climbing Tower, visit the Museums, and take a memorable picture in Kilburn’s Photo Parlor.

  • Seniors 65+ $18
