Easy Sour Cream Chicken Recipe

Sour Cream Chicken is an easy and delicious weeknight meal. Boneless skinless chicken is covered in a sour cream mixture and baked in the oven. Serve this family loved chicken dish with a side of steamed broccoli, over egg noodles or rice.

As a mom of three, I’m all about the easy family dinners. Weeknights are always a busy time between the after school activities and the sports, so these casserole type dinners are always a win.  Casseroles almost always solve the problem as most of the ingredients are placed into one dish and baked for an hour. I can get a couple side dishes ready then help the kids with their homework because dinner is already cooking in the oven.

This baked sour cream chicken doesn’t get much easier when it comes to needing a quick dinner. It is made made with a casserole dish and requires very little prep work. The entire family loved this recipe including my toddler.

The simple sour cream sauce is made with a handful of common spices that you most likely already have in your spice cabinet. The sour cream mixture keeps the chicken moist while also adding delicious flavor.

What can I make with chicken and sour cream?

There are a variety of recipes that you can make with chicken with sour cream. For instance, growing up my mother would always make Chicken Divan, which is a chicken casserole with broccoli, cream cheese, and cream of chicken soup. For an easy weeknight family dinner this past week I made Sour Cream Chicken, which is similar to a chicken recipe that my mother used to make but I omitted the broccoli and cream of chicken soup.

Ingredients for Sour Cream Chicken

First, make sure you have all of the ingredients on hand to make this easy chicken recipe.

  • 3-4 boneless chicken breast
  • 1 cup mozzarella
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • Parsley chopped, for garnish

How to make chicken with sour cream sauce?

Step 1: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly coat a 9×13 baking dish or casserole dish with olive oil.

Step 2: Mix together sour cream with a 1/2 cup of Parmesan, oregano, basil, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Step 3: Lay your chicken breasts in baking dish, top each with mozzarella cheese. Spread sour cream mixture over the chicken. Top with remaining Parmesan cheese.

Step 4: Place in the oven, and cook for one hour. The cook time will vary depending on the size of the chicken breasts. Thicker chicken will take 60 minutes, while smaller pieces will take 30-45 minutes. The chicken is cooked when the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.

Sprinkle parsley over the top as garnish.
