Skip Takeout – The Best Sweet and Sour Chicken Recipe
Skip the takeout, this Sweet and Sour Chicken baked in the oven will become family favorite. Bite sized pieces of chicken breast are coated in a homemade sweet and sour sauce and baked to perfection. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions and serve on top of your favorite rice.
This homemade sweet and sour sauce is so good with chicken and you can also serve it on top of pork chops. This is one recipe that I don’t have to worry about the kids not wanting to eat, they’re always licking their plates dry and asking for more.
Sweet and Sour Chicken:
Chicken Batter Ingredients:
- 3-4 boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1 inch pieces
- salt & pepper
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 2 eggs beaten
- 1/4 cup olive oil
Homemade Sweet and Sour sauce Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 4 tbs ketchup
- 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
- 1 tbs soy sauce
- 1 tsp garlic salt
- sesame seeds optional
How to make Sweet and Sour Chicken in the oven.
- Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Cut chicken breast into cubes. Season with salt & pepper to taste. Heat 1/4 cup olive oil in a large skillet.
- In a small bowl, beat 2 eggs. In a separate bowl add cornstarch. Dip chicken into the cornstarch to coat then dip into the eggs.
- Cook chicken in skillet until browned, it doesn’t need to be cooked through, just lightly browned.
- Place browned chicken on a 9×13 greased baking dish.
- Whisk together the sweet and sour sauce ingredients in a bowl then pour evenly over the chicken.
- Bake for one hour, turning chicken over every 15 minutes. Serve over rice, and top with sesame seeds. (optional)
The baked Sweet and Sour Chicken was delicious, our family of four had it devoured and the kids especially enjoyed it. I didn’t have to ask them once to sit at the table and finish their dinner, instead they were asking for seconds.

I just made this dish and it was wonderful. About 1/2 way through, I threw in some diced red and yellow pepper and they turned out perfect. I would also suggest doubling the sauce as you want your rice sopped with it! Very good and definitely a do-over!
