Tyler has always loved playing outside and riding bikes, but the last couple of day’s I have not been able to get him off of his balance bike. He’s been zooming around on his Burley MyKick balance bike non-stop. His balance has noticeably improved as he can glide across the driveway without his feet touching the ground so today I randomly decided to take out his pedal bike that he got for his birthday and see how he’d do. I took off the training wheels and never imagined within seconds he’d be riding his pedal bike around with no training wheels! He completely amazed me, he was so quick that I couldn’t even get a first video. Since I never expected him to take off, I wasn’t prepared – my camera was still in the house and I had forgot where I put my iPhone, so I was anxiously running around the yard trying to remember where I left it – only to find it a few feet from me in a chair. Within minutes he perfected riding a bike with no training wheels.
We also decided to take Jacob’s training wheels off at the same time, Jacob’s bike is a little too big for him, we should have got him a 14 inch, but we got him a 16 in so I had to lower the seat so he could touch the ground. Jacob has not been using the balance bike, only his pedal bike with training wheels, he had a harder time balancing and kept falling. He was getting discouraged and wanted to stop trying to ride a bike without training wheels since he kept falling. I now feel bad that 3-year-old Tyler can ride a bike without training wheels while my 5-year-old struggles. So this week we working to get Jacob riding a bike with no training wheels also. Although the Burly MyKick Balance Bike seems a little small for him, he has been using it all day and trying to learn how to balance. He has gotten better and I’m sure in no time he will learn how to balance just as good as Tyler does.
Today I saw first hand the advantages of using a Balance Bike and how it can help a child learn how to ride a bike. The main part of learning how to ride a pedal bike with no training wheels is balancing, and the balance bike did just that, taught Tyler how to balance. No training wheels this week, Preschool next month, can I just pause time?
