Jacob and Tyler are both in this phase where they want to know what everything is and where it comes from, whether it’s a tomato their eating, a juice their drinking, or a mosquito they just spotted. With Halloween right around the corner, I thought this would be a great time to make a “fear factor, Halloween” themed, educational ecology project to learn about the World’s Most Scariest Bugs.
The best way to control the pests is to learn everything we can about them, the good and the bad. The folks over at Orkin have been studying bugs for the past 100 years and have created the The Orkin Ecologist website to encourage others to explore the science behind insects. Before we got started on our World’s Most Scariest Bugs project we headed over to the The Orkin Ecologist website and learned about How Spiders Build The Perfect Orb Web and The Top 10 Facts About Pollination And Pollinators. We have a huge bees hive near our bus stop, it is far enough away that it does not bother any of the children, so I wanted to show the boys the reason why I didn’t want to knock the bees hive down, how the bees help plants to reproduce.
For our ecology project we decided to make a poster board filled with pictures of scary bugs as well as fun facts about them. The boys were excited to help me print, cut and paste as they checked the pictures of the bugs. They were most interested in the Bullet Ants, that have the most painful sting out of any bee, ant, wasp, or hornet. Tyler often plays with ants during the summer months, and couldn’t believe that in other parts of the world they actually sting. He thought bee’s only sting.

You will need access to the internet, a printer, construction paper, scissors, and a glue stick.
- Visit The Orkin Ecologist and click on the image/text of the World’s Scariest – Deadliest Insects.
- Check out the World’s Scariest – Deadliest Insects, print the images. as well as learn educations facts about the insects.
- You can either write the facts on the poster board, or make a Word document and print it like I did.
- Cut out all of the images, and facts. We glued the images to colorful construction paper, and used decorative scissors to make it more attractive.
- Glue all of the cutouts to your poster board
