While I made sure to always thank both of my grandfathers on Veterans Day it was mainly just a bonus day off from school that I looked forward to, then I met my husband, and it all changed. I now have respect and appreciation for Veteran’s Day, and dedicate the day to giving thanks to those who gave so much including my husband, my father-in-law, my grandfathers, and some of our closest friends. Our children were brought into this world while my husband was serving active duty and have grown up showing respect and appreciation for our military, not just on Veteran’s day, but every day.
Throughout the year and especially during the months of November and December, the children and I donate to the local organizations that send care packages overseas, even though we are no longer active-duty. Seeing and hearing about the reactions first hand when my husband was deployed, makes the time and money spent well worth it, to be able to brighten someones day. While my husband was deployed I made sure to send extra packages for deployed military members that did not receive anything, there was this one friend in particular that never received anything, so whenever I would send my husband a care package I would address one to him as well. My husband always told me how thankful his friend was, and how excited he was to receive a care package filled with magazines, books, and snacks. I sent packages every couple of weeks and it became something that they looked forwarded to and boosted the moral when they were feeling down, being away from home and family for months on end.
As a military family, we have seen the achievements and the friendships made, but also the sacrifices, stress and the struggles of deployments. These veterans have make countless sacrifices for not only my family, but for yours as well, and they deserve to be thanked.
