My tip is to start early. You do not want to wait until the last minute because the closer you are to the holidays the more chaos there is. I shop throughout the year. If I need a last minute gift, I either opt for gift cards or I shop on Amazon to get free 2-day shipping with my Prime membership to avoid the hassle and lines of the stores.
