I grew up in a family where recycling was a part of every day life. I would never think to throw out a plastic container, whether it is a milk jug, a water bottle, or container that the strawberries came in, it gets rinsed out and put in the recycling bin. All cardboard gets cut up and placed into a brown paper bag and put out for Monday morning recycling. There have been many days where I was left wondering what happened to all those recycled products, are they just melted down and made into plastic containers again or are they made into different products? My question became answered when I recently came across Re-Play and noticed that all of their children’s tableware products were made out of recycled milk jugs.
Re-Play products are made with #2, HDPE plastic which is basically milk jugs. It is BPA free, Phthalate Free, PVC free choice. All of their products are made in the USA, mainly on the east coast. Their molding plant is within 150 miles of their warehouse and their packaging is just 20 miles away.

After your community recycler hauls away your empty milk jugs and other recycling items, they are flattened and sorted. Our supplier carefully sorts and selects the appropriate containers, grinds them up into flakes, which are thoroughly cleaned, dried and color sorted. Then the little flakes are melted and made into pellets for shipping to our molder. He mixes the recycled pellets with a batch of colorant pellets, and then magically molds each Re-Play item. Voila!
The plates, cups, bowls, and utensils are all thick hard plastic, I was surprised at how durable they were. There’s no need to worry about them breaking if they get knocked off of the table, they were definitely designed with active little children in mind. The teeth on the forks were my main concern since I have two rugged little boys, the teeth are strong and sturdy with a rounded end so if
my little angels the boys happen to misbehave at the table I don’t have to worry about one of them getting poked & injured.
The divided plates are great for the boys. I usually prepare more then one food item for lunches and dinners and they dividers are my favorite, the main item will go in the big part along with two sides. I love the neat look and the boys love having their food organized and in their own certain area. The smaller side area is great for syrup or ketchup and doesn’t allow it to run into the other foods. When you are done using the divided plates, they stack very nicely in the cabinet. Most of our other children’s divided plates are different shapes and sizes, I’m a big fan of organization, so the ability to stack them neatly one on top of the other was a big plus.
I was impressed with the packing of the Re-Play products. All of the products are packaged in an environmentally friendly packaging with recycled paperboard sleeves that are customized to fit each product. To take the products out of the packaging you simply press up on the corners, there’s no twist ties, I’m sure I’m not the only one that hates those, and you don’t need scissors to cut through zip ties.
Although I usually hand-wash plastics, the Re-Play plates, cups, bowls, and utensils are all dishwasher safe on the top rack. If I don’t feel like hand-washing dishes it is great to know I can just place them in the dishwasher. Re-Play products should never be places in the microwave. If you need food heated up, place it on a glass or paper plate to microwave and then transfer it to the Re-Play plates/bowls.

Overall, I was really impressed with the Re-Play products and love how they are heavy duty. Not only do I love the look and feel of the products, it feels great knowing that they are environmentally friendly and made with recycled products. I was surprised when I saw the cost of the 3 pack of plates and 3 pack of bowls, and now plan to purchase additional sets due to the low cost. I expected the price to be at least $10-$12 since they were each a 3 pack, not $4.99 and $5.99. After looking at the store locator Re-Play products are not available at my nearby Walmart, but the next time we head up to our lake house there is a Walmart on the way that carries them and I plan to purchase additional divided plates and bowls, shopping in store will save me the shipping cost.
